Effects of Sugar on the Body

While the body needs glucose as a source of energy, excessive consumption of fructose can lead to various health issues. Fructose can be converted into glucose, used as fuel, or stored as fat, leading to increased blood triglycerides, liver fat, blood glucose levels, body mass index, and insulin resistance. These markers are associated with metabolic dysfunction, type 2 diabetes, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

Several studies have highlighted the benefits of reducing sugar consumption on overall health. Research conducted on children who stopped consuming sugar and fructose for 10 days showed significant improvements in various health markers, including reduced triglycerides, fasting blood glucose, body mass index, and insulin resistance. The World Health Organization recommends limiting sugar intake to about 58 grams per day for adults and children.

To reduce sugar intake, individuals can start by tracking their daily food consumption, identifying sources of added sugars, and setting achievable goals to increase whole fruits and vegetables while decreasing added sugar intake. By being mindful of the sugar content in foods and making conscious dietary choices, individuals can improve their overall health outcomes.
